Kenton Slash- Dark Matter/ The Emporer of Antarctica

anish electro-house duo Kenton Slash Demon teamed up with visual artists Dark Matters and The Emperor of Antarctica for thevideo for their most recent single, “Ore”.

“It’s a view of what the human body looks like when experienced from another dimension — by bending time or bending space, or completely switching them around,” explains Christian Zander of the Emperor of Antarctica. “In simple words, it’s a video about bending flesh,” adds Lasse Andersen, from Dark Matters.

The pair used Processing to modify footage shot in a studio in two different ways. The first was a classic “slit scan” technique, where slices of the video are delayed over time — this allowed for the sequences where people bend around each other.

The second is a little more complex. “If you imagine a film as a 3D block of sequential frames, normally what you do when you watch it, is travel through this block in the time direction. What we’ve done instead with this, is make you travel through the same block from another direction, i.e. from left to right. In effect traveling through space instead of through time,” explains Zander. “This is what’s used in the sequences where the character seems to explode onto the frame and reveal themselves folded out from all angles at once.”

The inspiration came from the “distorted slow-motion” feel of the track, says Andersen. “We are all graphic designers who follow rules all day long and the whole randomness combined with human flesh just seemed intriguing and different from what we usually do.”

The end product was somewhat tamer than the original plans. “It was full-on nudity at the start, which we decided would get too much attention compared to the concept of naked skin-bending, and of course limit the places the video could be seen,” says Andersen. “So halfway through we started to ask the actors to cover up the sexy stuff and get everything Youtube-safe. There are still some traces here and there from the naughty shots though.”

Dark Matters put together a huge video installation at the Roskilde festival in Denmark earlier in 2012, and is now working on concepts for a Danish history museum in the south of the country. The Emperor of Antarctica is working on a video for another Danish band — I Got You On Tape — as well as putting together some clothing designs.

D&AD Channel 4 competion “4 forward” for 2012.

This shows the level of work that I should be aiming for, the logo needs to look sleek, animating on top of film seems to be a trend. It just needs to speak to it’s audience perfectly.

Making of More 4 Ident. This channel is focussed towards a slightly elder audience with “intelligent and insightful” programming.

There is a reference to a digital scrap book with the plastic triangles turning around. The slow movement of the logo represents a more relaxing, mature atmosophere, similar to turning over the pages of a book. The settings that they have chosen also hark to the more adult audience, places that they would like to find themselves in their free time. However the plastic and bright colours still gives it a fresh youthful vibe.

Channel 4 character traits: fresh, full of movement, sparky, natural, festival like, bohemian.
